Objective: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals recovered from substance use disorders regarding career hope.
Method: This qualitative study adopted a descriptive phenomenological approach. The target population comprised individuals recovered from substance use disorders in Khomeinishahr, Isfahan Province, Iran, in 2021. Participants were required to obtain a high score on the Career Hope Scale (Juntunen & Wettersten, 2006). An initial sample was recruited through convenience sampling, followed by purposive sampling to select 11 eligible participants. Although data saturation was reached after nine interviews, two additional interviews were conducted to ensure content saturation. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method.
Findings: Analysis identified 15 primary concepts, 7 subthemes, and 3 main themes. The findings indicated that acceptance of individuals in recovery by society and significant others facilitates continued recovery by strengthening positive self-concept and self-worth. Consequently, motivation and effort increase, providing a foundation for personal growth.
Conclusion: Educational programs promoting acceptance of individuals in recovery, stigma reduction, and stronger financial and emotional support may enhance career hope among individuals recovering from substance use disorders.
