Aim: The present study aimed to develop a structural model of successful transition of students from university to work based on protean career orientation and proactive personality, with the mediating role of career adaptability.
Method: This research was a descriptive study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population comprised all senior undergraduate students at public universities in Tehran during the 2023-2024 academic year, from which 350 students were selected as samples using cluster random sampling. The research instruments included Baruch's (2014) Protean Career Orientation questionnaire, Bateman and Crant's (1993) Proactive Personality scale, Savickas and Porfeli's (2012) Career Adapt-Abilities Scale, and Pasha, Hosseinian, and Pordelan's (2023) localized University-to-Work Transition questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 24 and AMOS 24 software for structural equation modeling.
Results: The standardized path coefficients of the direct paths in the hypothetical model from protean career orientation and career adaptability to successful transition of students from university to work were significant, while the path from proactive personality to successful transition of students was not significant. Furthermore, protean career orientation and proactive personality showed significant indirect effects on successful transition of students from university to work through the mediating role of career adaptability.
Conclusion: Accordingly, the modification and enhancement of protean career orientation and proactive personality, alongside increased career adaptability among students, creates the foundation for their successful transition from university to work.
