Abstract

Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of emotional intelligence in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and burnout in nurses. Methods: The research method was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of the study included all male and female nurses in Shariat Razavi and Shahid Chamran hospitals in Tehran in 2019. The census method was used to sample 186 individuals. Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Bradbury-Graves Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, and Young's Early Maladaptive Schema Questionnaire-Short Form were used to collect data. Pearson correlation coefficient test by path analysis method using SPSS and LISREL software was used to analyze the data. Results: The results of the correlation test showed a significant relationship between the five early maladaptive schemas with emotional intelligence and burnout, and the relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout was also confirmed (p<0.05). The test of the research model showed that detachment and rejection, autonomy and dysfunction, and excessive ringing in the ears influence burnout both directly and have been mediated by emotional intelligence. Disturbed compulsions directly affect burnout, and other directional schemas have no direct or indirect effect on burnout. Conclusion: As findings, it can be concluded that there are four early maladaptive schemas (exclusion and rejection schemas, autonomy and disrupted functioning, excessive ringing, and disrupted compulsions), and emotional intelligence plays a role in burnout so psychologists and counselors can pay special attention to these factors for preventing and reducing burnout.
